Senior Kindergarten through Second Grade
The start of elementary school is an exciting milestone for your child, and we strive to ensure a smooth and positive transition from preschool to formal education.
At Abiding Savior Lutheran School, your child will flourish under a traditional approach to education offered in a nurturing, values-aligned environment. Our commitment to academic excellence ensures that students are challenged to reach their full potential, while our distinctly Christian focus cultivates spiritual growth.
Students develop strong communication skills by focusing on reading, writing, and vocabulary.
Writing activities across all grades include personal narratives, opinion pieces, and informational texts, helping students express their thoughts clearly. Weekly spelling tests and regular handwriting practice further ensure proficiency in written communication, making our students confident and capable communicators.
Lower elementary students at Abiding Savior discover the joy of learning through a variety of engaging activities and hands-on learning experiences. Using themed units, students celebrate and study holidays, science, and social studies topics, often incorporating stories, crafts, and STEM activities. Field trips, such as visits to Eckerts Farm and the Butterfly House, provide real-world exploration opportunities.
In the classroom, STEM tubs filled with magnet blocks, play dough, and other materials allow first and second graders to engage in free play, fostering sensory, building, and collaboration skills. Learning centers tailored to each student’s needs further encourage curiosity and a love for discovery.
Through intentional activities and curricula, we focus on nurturing students’ social and emotional development. Students learn self-care and interpersonal skills, helping them understand and manage their emotions while practicing empathy, kindness, and respect. In Senior Kindergarten, daily afternoon playtime allows students to work together, share, and play, fostering cooperation and building friendships.
Through engaging Bible stories, songs, and memory verses, students develop a solid foundation in Biblical knowledge. Chapel services and faith-based activities reinforce these teachings and foster a sense of community. Students learn about God’s love, Jesus’s sacrifice, and the importance of living out Christian values. By consistently hearing and applying these lessons, our prayer is that students will grow into faith-filled believers who understand and embrace their relationship with God.
Each Friday, kindergarten students are paired with fourth graders as Reading Buddies to practice reading and engage with different stories. During chapel services, kindergarteners sit with 7th and 8th graders as Chapel Buddies, learning, listening, and singing together. Once a month, the entire school participates in Faith Families, engaging in faith-based activities with students and teachers from other grade levels.
Elementary students enjoy field trips each year, such as visits to Eckerts Farm, the Butterfly House, Lutheran South for a play, and the zoo.
Lower elementary students are encouraged to participate in athletic teams through CYC St. Louis.
The connection you have with your children’s teachers is wonderful. It allows for further transparency into your child’s behavior/academics in school as well as a heads up on things you can do on the homefront to boost the curriculum they are learning… Simply put, my family loves Abiding Savior Lutheran School. By the way, Pastor Parvey and Pastor/Principal Ryherd (I’m sure the entire staff does as well) know every kid’s name at the school and greet them at the door every day by name. THAT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME AS A PARENT!!!!!!!
Our experience at Abiding Savior has been absolutely wonderful. The Christ-centered education with caring teachers and involved families make it a welcoming community where I know my son is learning and growing – academically, emotionally and socially. We could not ask for a better education and community that matches our family’s values!
I graduated from Abiding Savior in 2012 and still have yet to find a kind, inclusive, and Christ-centered environment that could even compare to Abiding Savior’s. Between the staff and the education provided at Abiding Savior, there is simply no school like it in town.
I have two boys and they both attend the Early Childhood program at Abiding Savior. We have had a wonderful experience there for the past three years. I feel like my children are loved and cared for by the teachers as if they were their own. They provide a great educational environment as well. My children have grown as students and people. We are grateful to have a place like Abiding Savior Lutheran School.
The school and staff are all amazing. I can’t say enough about this school. I have three boys, and not only do they prepare them for High School, but they also prepare them for life in the real world. My wife and I wanted a school where our boys could not only get a good education but, more importantly, learn about their character as a person, all while growing in their walk with God. You have to find what’s best for you, and for me, we found that here.
My son just completed his Prek 3’s year at Abiding Savior. I am very impressed with how much he has learned this past year but what I love most about his growth is his love for Jesus! He come home singing new Jesus songs and telling me all about the Bible story they read that day. The atmosphere and teachers are very caring, nurturing and engaging!
